About ONA
ONA, or Okanagan Nation Alliance, is the premier First Nations government in the Okanagan region. With a rich history spanning thousands of years, the Syilx Okanagan people have thrived through self-reliance and a deep connection to their land and resources. They have built a sustainable economy by hunting, fishing, growing, harvesting, and trading.
However, the colonization and establishment of reserves without negotiation of a treaty disrupted their way of life. The ONA was formed in 1981 to represent the eight member communities and address common concerns. Each community is represented through the Chiefs Executive Council.
Today, the ONA continues to assert the Syilx Okanagan's ownership of the land, as no treaty has been negotiated. They strive to protect their culture, language, and heritage while fostering partnerships and pursuing initiatives for a better future.
