About Sylheti Language
Sylheti Language is an individual organization dedicated to advocating for the recognition and preservation of the Sylheti language. With an estimated 11 million speakers worldwide, Sylheti is an Indo-Aryan language that is at risk of disappearing in Bangladesh and parts of India. Sylheti Language aims to raise awareness about the importance of Sylheti and campaigns for its inclusion in the school curriculum.
They organize online and offline events, promote online petitions, and provide excellent learning materials for the language. The organization believes in breaking down complex information into easily understandable materials to aid the learning process. They also support Sylheti society with education and learning resources.
Sylheti Language has a rich history, influenced by Persian Arabic and evolving from Magadhi Prakrit. It has its own unique Sylheti-Nagri alphabet, developed in the 14th century, and was historically spoken in the Surma and Burak river basins. Despite its significant number of speakers, Sylheti is often mistaken as a dialect of Bengali, leading to misconceptions and ignorance about the language.
