Yhdenvertaisuusvaltuutettu on itsenäinen ja riippumaton viranomainen, joka edistää yhdenvertaisuutta ja puuttuu syrjintään. Valtuutettu toimii myös kansallisena ihmiskaupparaportoijana, naisiin kohdistuvan väkivallan raportoijana ja maastapoistamisen täytäntöönpanon valvojana. Tehtäviin sisältyy lisäksi ulkomaalaisten oikeuksien ja aseman edistäminen. Yhdenvertaisuusvaltuutetun puoleen voi kääntyä, jos on kokenut tai havainnut syrjintää iän, alkuperän, kansalaisuuden, kielen, uskonnon, vakaumuksen, mielipiteen, poliittisen toiminnan, ammattiyhdistystoiminnan, perhesuhteiden, terveydentilan, vammaisuuden, seksuaalisen suuntautumisen tai muun henkilöön liittyvän syyn perusteella.
