The Hands-On Course in Tablet Technology is a postgraduate educational program offered by the Pii Center for Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. Established in 1998, it has trained more than 2,000 attendees from pharmaceutical, dietary supplement, animal health, and food industries, as well as equipment and excipient suppliers and regulatory authorities. The course provides education in conventional and advanced technologies for developing and manufacturing solid oral dosage forms, including hot-melt extrusion and continuous manufacturing approaches.
Industry and academic experts deliver lectures and supervise practical laboratory sessions. Topics include formulation design using Quality by Design principles, preformulation, granulation, drying, powder compaction, tablet coating, analytical testing, scale-up, stability, and regulatory considerations. Participants gain hands-on experience with processes and equipment such as instrumented tablet presses, fluid-bed granulators, extruders, and 3D printing, alongside testing for tablet quality and drug release. Designed for professionals in formulation and process development, manufacturing, analytical methods, quality control, and related fields, the program combines technical instruction with applied training in pharmaceutical development and production.
