About TAC
The Treatment Advocacy Center (TAC), founded in 1998 by Dr. E. Fuller Torrey, is dedicated to reforming the approach to severe mental illness (SMI) in the United States. Originating from Dr. Torrey's experiences at a clinic for unhoused individuals suffering from severe mental health issues, TAC aims to improve the lives of these vulnerable populations. The organization emphasizes the importance of advocacy, legislative reform, and evidence-based practices to create systemic change.
TAC focuses on promoting assisted outpatient treatment (AOT) programs and conducting policy research, ensuring that treatment options are accessible before mental health crises lead to homelessness or incarceration. Through its outreach via media and community engagement, TAC educates the public, fosters grassroots advocacy, and channels resources for individuals affected by SMI. Committed to shaping national discussions regarding mental health policies, TAC's work is backed by statistical research and community involvement, making it a pivotal force in the advocacy landscape for mental health reform.
