The Taft Historical Society is a community organization dedicated to preserving and documenting the history of Taft, Florida. Its members, including local residents and friends of the area, collect historical materials and share the stories of the community’s development, from its early Native American presence and citrus and turpentine industries to its incorporation in 1912 and later growth. The society maintains historical documents, photographs, census records, scrapbooks and exhibits at the Taft Community Center.
Displays include a former fire station siren, a vintage fire hydrant, artifacts made from original Dixie Highway bricks, historical photographs and a locally made quilt. The society has published four books: The History of Taft Florida, Families of Taft, Veterans of Taft and What’s Cooking; each is available for $10 through society members. Members meet on the second Thursday of each month at the community center, where visitors can view exhibits during opening hours.
The society also welcomes photographs for scanning and return, as well as people interested in joining its preservation efforts
