TaiEOL

Taiwan Encyclopedia of Life (TaiEOL) is a public biodiversity knowledge platform jointly maintained by Taiwan’s Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency and Academia Sinica’s Digital Culture Center. Since 2011, it has brought together experts, professional communities, and public contributors to document Taiwan’s known organisms. Its core resource is a collection of species profiles, with a dedicated webpage for each species and information reviewed by specialists in the relevant biological groups.

The website offers free access to knowledge and media, including images and audiovisual materials, covering more than 60,000 kinds of organisms across groups such as animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Visitors can explore species classifications, browse a media library and themed nature features, and learn about individual species and broader biological groups. Data are shared under open licenses for learning, research, and reuse. TaiEOL also provides announcements and open-data access, while inviting users to help expand and improve its coverage. The platform aims to support biodiversity research, education, conservation, and sustainable use, while helping people appreciate Taiwan’s rich biological diversity.
