Taking Time: South Bay is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization serving people navigating the death of someone they love. Founded by Claire Towle, LCSW, and Patty Ellis, a Certified Bereavement Educator, the organization has provided bereavement services in the South Bay for more than 25 years. Its mission is to offer compassionate, culturally sensitive, informed support that gives people from diverse communities time and space to grieve.
Services are available to children ages five and older, teens, young adults, and adults who have experienced loss from illness, sudden death, or other causes. Programs include eight-week group support with grief education, discussion, activities, and peer connection, as well as individual bereavement counseling from licensed mental health professionals with grief experience. Taking Time also supports students and staff in local schools and offers services to businesses, places of worship, clubs, community organizations, and health care facilities. The organization shares grief and loss resources, coping tools, educational information, and community events, and welcomes volunteers to accompany children, teens, adults, and families through loss.
