About Talyllyn Railway
Talyllyn Railway, affectionately known as 'The Railway with a Heart of Gold,' is the oldest preserved railway in the world. Since opening in 1865, it has captivated visitors with its rich history and scenic journey. Located in Tywyn, a coastal town on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, the heritage steam engines transport passengers to Nant Gwernol, nestled deep in the mountains above Abergynolwyn.
During the 55-minute journey, passengers are treated to breathtaking views of Cadair Idris, one of Britain's highest mountains. As you travel through ancient woodlands and meadows of the Fathew Valley, keep your eyes peeled for a plethora of birdlife including Red Kites, Cormorants, and Peregrine Falcons. The comfortable covered and open carriages provide an optimal vantage point to appreciate the picturesque scenery.
Upon arrival at Abergynolwyn, indulge in delicious homemade treats and beverages at Quarryman's Caban. The area boasts numerous trails and walks, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of Snowdonia National Park. Talyllyn Railway is renowned as one of The Great Little Trains of Wales and proudly twinned with Australia's Puffing Billy Railway.
The railway also offers a range of special experiences, preserves an extensive rolling stock, and upholds a commitment to environmental stewardship as a World Heritage Site. To support the preservation efforts of this iconic railway, consider making a donation or becoming a member. Talyllyn Railway invites you to embark on a journey through time, immersing yourself in history, natural beauty, and the charm of steam railways
