About Tanzania Media Women
Tanzania Media Women’s Association (TAMWA) is a non-profit organization established in 1987 and registered under the Societies Ordinance Cap 337 of 1954. TAMWA is dedicated to advocating for women and children's rights by conducting awareness-raising activities to bring about cultural, policy, and legal changes in Tanzanian society. With over 200 members who hold diplomas in journalism and have extensive media experience, TAMWA's team works in both public and private media houses in various roles such as editors, reporters, producers, and communication officers.
Through collaborations with other organizations, TAMWA has played a significant role in transforming Tanzanian society. They were instrumental in the enactment of vital legislation such as The Sexual Offences Act and the complete repeal of The Spinster, Widows, and Female Divorcee Protection Act. TAMWA's efforts have also resulted in increased female representation in parliament and local government councils.
Committed to transparency, accountability, and the observance of human rights, TAMWA operates as a corruption-free zone. They ensure that their policies and practices align with ethical standards. If any misconduct is observed or suspected, TAMWA has an investigation team to address and manage the situation.
By using media as a powerful tool for change, TAMWA strives to create a peaceful Tanzanian society that upholds human rights from a gender perspective.
