As with the overall mold at the Academy, in the MMA program, we use what works. The majority of the techniques come from the Chinese martial arts; a combination of Tai Chi and other Southern Chinese Style martial arts that have been tested in combat over the millennia. The class works through all ranges of unarmed combat, whether it be kicking and punching range, clinch range, or grappling range.

The Academy of Martial Studies is a Veteran Owned Small Business providing practical martial arts and combatives training for military, law enforcement, and adult students. Its flagship Ultimate Reality Based Attack & Neutralization (U.R.B.A.N.) program prepares war fighters for close-quarter confrontations through realistic, adaptable instruction focused on survival and effectiveness rather than sport competition or memorized routines. Courses are delivered at client sites worldwide, Academy locations, and partner facilities, and can be tailored to a unit’s mission and operating environment.
Training covers stand-up, clinch, and ground combat; defense against multiple attackers; knife fighting and improvised weapons; defensive tactics; and the use of combat equipment. The Academy also offers scenario-based and pre-mission training, physical development, combat psychology, skills testing, sustained practice, and train-the-trainer programs. Its instructors are experienced veterans who support ongoing learning and skill maintenance.
For adult students, the Academy offers MMA classes drawing primarily on Chinese martial arts, including Tai Chi and Southern Chinese styles.
