About Tardis Project
Tardis is a collaborative initiative that focuses on maintaining a network of servers and services, aimed at fostering practical system administration and computing skills. Established in 1988 at the University of Edinburgh, Tardis stands as one of the earliest student-run computing systems in the UK, inspired by a commitment to small-scale computing aimed at reducing reliance on large tech companies.
The organization is powered by a network of dedicated volunteers who provide various services, including SSH, email, and web/Git hosting—affordably replacing the need for expansive cloud services. Tardis operates as a Special Interest Group within CompSoc, emphasizing community engagement and personal responsibility in managing its systems. This grassroots approach encourages members to suggest enhancements and take active roles in administration.
Though all services are offered on a best-effort basis, Tardis fosters a collaborative spirit, urging members to contribute actively to its evolution while adhering to guidelines for responsible use and community respect.
