Mechanical Tempest is Pōneke’s community bicycle workshop, offering a welcoming, hands-on space where people can learn to maintain and repair their own bicycles. Entirely volunteer run, the workshop encourages cycling as a way to enjoy the freedom of bicycle transportation while making better use of resources. Visitors are supported to reuse second-hand parts and help divert waste from landfill. No previous experience is necessary, and the workshop welcomes everyone.

Mechanical Tempest has operated in locations around Wellington for more than 20 years. It is now based at 21 Brooklyn Road, in the Central Park Apartments, with a new home provided by Te Toi Mahana. The organisation also shares tutorials and invites people to volunteer, with inductions and a volunteer handbook helping newcomers get involved.
