About Tennessee Historical Society
The Tennessee Historical Society (THS), founded in 1849, proudly holds the title of the oldest continually operating historical organization in Tennessee. As the state affiliate of National History Day, THS actively engages students and educators, doubling participation in this educational initiative since 2008. Each year, over 8,300 students compete in regional contests, culminating in a delegation representing Tennessee at the National History Day contest in Maryland.
THS publishes the Tennessee Historical Quarterly, a peer-reviewed journal, and is responsible for the Tennessee Encyclopedia of History and Culture, which features over 2,000 searchable entries. The Society focuses on preserving Tennessee's rich history, heritage, and culture, with a collection of artifacts and documents that have shaped the understanding of the state's past. Additionally, THS offers research fellowships to scholars and organizes Tennessee History Day, fostering learning about Tennessee's distinctive historical narratives.
