Te Rau Puāwai Education Trust is a registered New Zealand charity dedicated to helping children and young people across Aotearoa access educational opportunities that support them to thrive and reach their potential. Its name, gifted by former director Paora Puru, means “the leaf or frond that blossoms,” reflecting the Trust’s focus on helping learners, families, teachers and communities flourish through education.
The Trust invests in educational research, initiatives, interventions and projects that address inequality, with particular attention to Māori, Pasifika and neurodiverse learners. Its funding aims to improve learner outcomes and strengthen teacher effectiveness, recognising that learning includes both social and cognitive capabilities. The Trust also understands “teacher” broadly, including education professionals, support staff, parents, whānau and others who influence students’ learning.
Through its grant-making, Te Rau Puāwai supports collaborative, evidence-informed approaches to building individual and community capability. It also provides information about the Te Rau Puāwai Māori Mental Health Scholarship Programme. The Trust is the sole shareholder of Cognition Education Ltd.
