Testcontainers is an open-source software project that helps developers test applications against real dependencies in lightweight, temporary Docker containers. Instead of relying on mocks or complex local environment setups, developers define the services their tests need as code. Testcontainers starts the required containers when tests run and removes them afterward, giving each test a clean, predictable environment.
The library supports databases, message brokers, web servers, Selenium-compatible browsers, and other services that can run in Docker. Its modules include more than 50 integrations, and implementations are available for Java, Go, .NET, Node.js, Python, Rust, Ruby, PHP, Haskell, Clojure, Elixir, Scala, and Native.
Testcontainers is designed for several testing needs, including data-access integration tests, automated UI and acceptance tests, and application integration tests. These capabilities help teams check compatibility with real services and create portable test environments for development and continuous integration. The project provides documentation, guides, language-specific resources, community channels, and a newsletter to help users get started and stay informed.
