About The Big Green Machine
The Big Green Machine is an open-access research and data platform tracking investment, employment, and facility locations across the North American clean energy supply chain. Maintained by Jay Turner and student researchers in Wellesley College’s Environmental Studies Department, the site covers the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with a focus on solar, wind, battery, and electric vehicle industries.
Its interactive dashboard brings together information on more than 600 projects, representing approximately $280 billion in investment and 370,000 estimated jobs. Visitors can explore investment trends and state or provincial data, search projects, view summary tables, and find facility profiles and status information. The platform also offers access to underlying data by request and tools for creating custom reports for states or congressional districts. Additional analyses address topics such as foreign investment, environmental justice, and congressional districts.
The data is compiled from publicly available sources and updated at least monthly. Figures are estimates, may be incomplete where public information is unavailable, and cover projects that are operating, under construction, or planned.
