The Powerhouse is a traditional Shotokan karate dojo on Ash Street in Vancouver, serving students since 1992. Founded by Sensei Ramin Emami, a 6th dan black belt who trained at Japan Karate Association headquarters, the dojo teaches karate through kihon (basics), kata (forms) and kumite (sparring). Its age-specific classes welcome children, teens and adults, from beginners to experienced students.
Children aged 4 to 7 learn introductory techniques through games and fitness activities, while students aged 8 to 12 develop karate skills, self-defence, discipline and confidence. Teen and adult classes offer newcomer-friendly training focused on self-defence, strength, flexibility, fitness and concentration. Families can also train side by side, and sport karate competition training and fitness kickboxing with pad work and conditioning are available.
The Powerhouse emphasizes respect, self-control and perseverance, with term-based goals and belt grading. Classes take place on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 3140 Ash Street. Prospective students can book a free introductory class, followed by a two- to four-week trial program, with no long-term commitment required to get started.
