the ASA

The American Studies Association (ASA) is dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary research on U.S. Established in 1951, we champion original scholarship, critical thinking, and civic engagement among a diverse community of researchers, educators, students, and activists. Our mission focuses on examining American history and culture through various perspectives, reflecting the complexities of society.

Our key offerings include the publication of the American Quarterly, a leading journal in the field of American studies, and the organization of an annual international conference alongside numerous regional events. These platforms enable collaboration with museums, public institutions, and local communities while facilitating important public discussions relevant to our academic pursuits.

With a commitment to addressing issues of race, gender, and class, the ASA has evolved significantly since its inception, expanding its membership to over 5,000 scholars today. Through advocacy, scholarships, and resources, we aim to enrich the understanding of American society and foster meaningful dialogue across disciplines.
