昭和43年(1968)仙行寺が、都心にある寺院の社会事業の一環として演劇活動の場を提供することを考え、新劇団の育成・日本人劇作家の新作品の発表・実験的演劇などを目的に掲げて、「池袋アートシアター」という名称のいわば手作りの劇場を始めました。その後昭和47年(1972)に劇場の名称を「シアターグリーン」として再スタートし、昭和55年(1980)には有限会社となり、長い間若手劇団の登竜門として存在してきました。ここから多くの劇団・劇作家・演出家・役者などを輩出し、その後演劇・テレビ・映画など多方面で活躍している彼らによって当劇場も評価を受けておりました。
