Theater for the New City (TNC) is a renowned community cultural center in New York City, dedicated to high artistic standards and extensive community service. As one of the city's most prolific theater organizations, TNC presents 30-40 premieres of new American plays annually, including at least 10 by emerging playwrights. Over the years, influential theater artists such as Sam Shepard, Moises Kaufman, and Tim Robbins have benefited from TNC's Resident Theater Program.
In addition to producing its own plays, TNC provides a platform for multi-ethnic/multi-disciplinary theater companies without a permanent home. Collaborations have included performances by Mabou Mines, Bread and Puppet Theater, and the Japanese women's drumming and dance group, COBU. TNC strives to engage and inspire low-income minority communities through free festivals, bringing the community into theater and vice versa.
With a remarkable lineup of Pulitzer Prize-winning productions and over 42 OBIE Awards for excellence, TNC continues to make significant contributions to the theatrical landscape
