About Theatre Works
Theatre Works is one of Australia's longest-running independent theaters, established in 1980 by a group of theater-makers from the Victorian College of the Arts. Originally located in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne, the theater later moved to St Kilda and has been in the same location ever since. At Theatre Works, artists are valued above all else.
The theater provides a safe and supportive environment for artistic and professional development, nurturing the careers of numerous artists over the past 40+ years. They have been instrumental in launching the careers of renowned names such as Andrew Bovell, Barrie Kosky, and Adena Jacobs, among others. In response to the industry's need for affordable rehearsal and development spaces, Theatre Works recently launched a second venue called Explosives Factory.
This space, with a rich local history, offers artists the necessary resources to create and evolve. The theater commissions, produces, and partners with artists to showcase new Australian works. With no upfront costs for productions, Theatre Works operates on a box office share model.
They rely heavily on donations to sustain their operations and support emerging indie artists. To continue their mission of discovering new talent and supporting ambitious work, Theatre Works is launching the Future Indie Theatre Fund. As a charity, they encourage contributions of any amount to help shape the future of independent theater.
