About The Black Curriculum
The Black Curriculum is a dynamic social enterprise that aims to challenge the Eurocentricity prevalent in local and national curriculums. Founded in 2019 by Lavinya Stennett, following her studies at SOAS, our mission is to address the absence of Black British history in the national curriculum. Joined by Bethany Thompson and Lisa Kennedy, our team rapidly expanded, bolstered by the global wave of racial reckoning in 2020.
Our comprehensive programs cater to young people aged 3-25, equipping them with a strong sense of identity and the necessary tools to navigate a diverse landscape. We strive to embed Black history within the English national curriculum, ensuring a wide array of contextual examples from Black British histories. Driven by a vision to empower all students, our mission revolves around teaching accessible and engaging Black histories throughout the year, 365 days a year, fostering social cohesion and knowledge development among young minds.
Meet our dedicated team, including Founder & CEO Lavinya Stennett, Head of Research Elizabeth Kwaw, Outreach Officer Janique Berryman, and Project Lead Ilhan Ahwed. We are supported by esteemed patrons such as Historian Jade Bentil, Youth Engagement Specialist Stuart Lawrence, Historian DAVID OLUSOGA, and English Rugby Player Maro Itoje. Stay connected by subscribing to our mailing list for exclusive news and updates on our diverse range of resources and programs.
