The Broad Cloth is a community-led storytelling project created by Jenifer Toksvig, bringing people together to imagine Skylark Island, a fictional island and community inspired by the cultures and histories of the real places that host the project. Through theatre, art, craft, music, gatherings and the sharing of local knowledge, participants help build an evolving story that connects different island communities while celebrating what makes each one distinctive.
The project explores how communities navigate change, particularly the tension between future needs and traditions. Its themes include accessibility and inclusion, community connections, heritage crafts and textiles, ecology and climate change, folk traditions, island heritage, individual agency, and future models of value and governance. People can take part in person or online, including through a digital community open to participants worldwide. The project has hosted or planned activity in places including Ingøy in Norway and the Isle of Wight, with ambitions to reach more British and Nordic coastal islands.
