The Cherokee National Holiday, celebrated annually since 1953, highlights the rich heritage and culture of the Cherokee Nation. This year’s theme, Gadugi – Unity Through Generations, emphasizes honoring ancestral traditions while fostering unity for future generations. The holiday commemorates the signing of the 1839 Cherokee Constitution and has grown into one of Oklahoma's largest festivals, drawing over 150,000 visitors from around the globe.
The event features a diverse array of activities suitable for all ages, including traditional games, arts and crafts, dance performances, and live music. Families can enjoy a vibrant parade, storytelling sessions, and engaging children's games that celebrate cultural expression. The festival also showcases new exhibits at local museums and historical sites, providing insights into Cherokee history and contemporary achievements.
With its free admission, the Cherokee National Holiday serves as a welcoming space for cultural exchange and inter-tribal fellowship, culminating in the exhilarating Inter-Tribal Powwow. This Labor Day weekend, join us in celebrating our community's legacy and spirit in Tahlequah.
