About The Commonwealth
The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 56 independent and equal countries, encompassing 2. 5 billion people and a diversity of advanced economies and developing nations. With a focus on shared goals such as development, democracy, and peace, the Commonwealth promotes values and principles outlined in the Commonwealth Charter.
Originally rooted in the British Empire, the Commonwealth now welcomes countries from around the world. In fact, the most recent additions were Gabon and Togo in 2022. At the heart of the Commonwealth are three intergovernmental organizations: the Commonwealth Secretariat, Commonwealth Foundation, and Commonwealth of Learning.
These organizations support member countries in various ways, from achieving development objectives to promoting democracy and public participation. Summits like the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting bring leaders together to address global challenges and prioritize areas of work. The Commonwealth Secretary-General, currently the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, plays a crucial role in representing and managing the organization.
Overall, the Commonwealth strives to foster a mutually respectful, resilient, peaceful, and prosperous community that values equality, diversity, and shared values
