About the CrowBox
CrowBox is an open-source experimentation platform for exploring how people can train and cooperate with corvids, the bird family that includes crows and magpies. Its device uses established behavioral-training principles to teach birds to exchange deposited coins for food. Captive crows have already learned the task, and the project invites people to test the system with wild corvids and share what they observe.
The latest model, CrowBox V.3, is redesigned for greater durability, weather resistance, and reliability. It features a modular software platform, configurable training stages, and support for camera and other sensor plugins. The project provides open-source design files, assembly guides, documentation, and build videos so users can make or adapt their own box. Parts costs vary, but the project aims to keep the build below US$100.
CrowBox also offers community resources, including a forum, wiki, and mailing list, where builders can get help and exchange results. Its broader goal is to encourage mutually beneficial relationships between people and urban wildlife, while investigating whether corvids might learn other useful tasks.
