The study suggests that excluding contaminant sources can help mitigate risks. The researchers believe that off-the-shelf items brought on board the ISS for personal use by astronauts, such as cameras, MP3 players, tablet computers, medical devices, and clothing, could be potential sources of the detected chemicals. While concentrations of organic contaminants on the ISS often exceeded those found on Earth, they were generally within the range found in homes and indoor environments across the US and Western Europe.
The constant recirculation of air inside the ISS, coupled with high levels of ionizing radiation, may contribute to the different concentrations and relative abundance of these chemicals in the dust compared to terrestrial indoor environments.
