The Flipflopi
@theflipflopi.com
We are kickstarting a #plasticrevolution by building a boat out of recycled plastic and sailing it 5,000kms from Kenya to Cape Town, sharing solutions - changing mindsets along the way. Our oceans are turning into plastic soup. Creatures that live in and around them are being poisoned – over 12 million tonnes of plastic is dumped into oceans every year.

About The Flipflopi
The Flipflopi is an East African circular economy movement that is taking a positive stance against plastic pollution. Their mission is to create public engagement, drive policy action, and ban all single-use plastics while ensuring that all other plastics are part of a circular economy. They have made history by building the world's first 100% recycled plastic sailing dhow.
Using innovative techniques and traditional boat-building methods, they melted, shaped, and carved ten tonnes of plastic waste collected from the Kenyan coast to create The Flipflopi. This impressive dhow is over nine meters long, weighs 7 tonnes, and is clad in 30,000 flip flops. Through their strong links to ocean heritage and Swahili culture, The Flipflopi creates locally-relevant products and campaigns to encourage behavioral change and repurposing waste in local economies and communities.
