The Merian Ensemble is a musician-run, nonprofit chamber group founded in 2018 by five women of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to address the underrepresentation of women in classical music. Through its “Listen: Works by Women” initiatives, the ensemble performs music by women composers, commissions new works, and brings classical music to school-age children and communities through outreach performances and presentations at libraries and public spaces in Atlanta and beyond. Its repertoire spans historical and contemporary composers, with programs featuring both established works and world premieres.
The ensemble’s debut album, The Book of Spells, was released by Navona Records in August 2024 and features world premiere recordings, including works commissioned by the group. The Merian Ensemble also presents public concerts and annual themed programs, and welcomes guest musicians for its seasons. Named in honor of scientist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian, the ensemble works to bring overlooked compositions to light and celebrate women composing today.
