About The Midwifery Folklorist™
The Midwifery Folklorist™ is a cultural preservation and education organization dedicated to documenting, celebrating, and sharing ancestral midwifery traditions, with particular attention to coastal communities and Black midwifery histories. Founded by Okunsola M. Amadou, a folk midwife, museum scholar, curator, archivist, and writer, the organization connects historical knowledge with contemporary birthwork through research, storytelling, public education, and advocacy.
Its offerings include books and publications, policy archives, public speaking, consulting, ethnographic midwifery research, and museum exhibits and curation. The Black Midwife Oracle™ combines an archival biography book collection with a study journal and oracle card deck, bringing the stories and legacies of Black midwives to a wider audience. Private membership services include the Folk Midwife™ designation pathway, Birth and Midwife Priestess™ initiation, legal advocacy, community access, and conference and directory opportunities.
The organization also promotes culturally grounded training through a three-tier Folk Midwife™ framework, from foundational learning to advanced apprenticeship and educator leadership.
