The Motherless Mothers

The Motherless Mothers is a charity and community supporting women who are navigating motherhood without their own mothers, whether through bereavement, estrangement, illness, distance or other forms of absence. Its mission is to help ensure no woman has to mother alone, by creating spaces where lived experience is recognised and shared.

The organisation offers peer support groups, drop-ins, antenatal groups, BACP counselling, local meetups and supper clubs, alongside an online WhatsApp community and other resources. It also helps members connect through events and guided conversation activities, including cards designed to encourage supportive gatherings among friends. For women unsure where to begin, its support pathways help them find a suitable option.

Beyond direct community support, The Motherless Mothers works to make maternal care more sensitive to grief. Its Grief-Aware Care framework is intended to guide clinicians, employers and wider society in understanding and supporting motherless mothers. The organisation also shares personal stories, promotes research and advocacy, and works with professionals and policymakers to raise awareness of the experiences and needs of women living with mother loss.
