The Ocean Trust

The Ocean Trust is a coral reef restoration organisation working with local communities to rehabilitate degraded reefs, particularly along the Kenyan coastline and across the Western Indian Ocean. Its approach uses restoration methods described as scientifically proven and successfully tested, with the goal of turning damaged rubble fields into healthy, coral-dominated ecosystems within a few years. The organisation also trains restoration practitioners and aims to help willing organisations build the skills needed to expand reef restoration.

Its work follows a structured process: selecting suitable sites, addressing social and government requirements, planning logistics and surveys, producing reef stars from steel, resin and sand, sourcing appropriate coral, and installing the structures on the seabed. The Ocean Trust then monitors coral growth and water temperatures and maintains the reef stars. Its reported impact for 2023–2024 includes six pilot projects along the Kenyan coast, 400 reef stars planted across multiple builds, and 4,000 coral fragments attached to frames. The organisation invites supporters to donate to help fund its restoration work and training.
