The Old Stone House & Washington Park is a historic site and park conservancy located in Brooklyn, New York. Our mission is to preserve and teach local and national history, specifically focusing on its impact on our historically significant neighborhood. As the conservancy organization for JJ Byrne Playground and Washington Park, we work tirelessly to care for our neighborhood park, playground, and gardens, creating a vibrant public space for the community to enjoy.
The Old Stone House building itself is a reconstruction of the 1699 Vechte-Cortelyou House, which was built on land obtained from the Lenape people in 1639. Situated in Washington Park, it marks the location of the original Dutch farmstead and played a pivotal role in the Battle of Brooklyn in 1776. Additionally, it serves as a tribute to the birthplace of the Brooklyn Dodgers.
We offer a variety of programs and events for all ages, including family programs, arts and cultural events, and neighborhood advocacy. Our educational initiatives aim to enlighten schoolchildren about the Battle of Brooklyn and colonial life through hands-on activities and inquiry-based learning. By supporting the Old Stone House, you are contributing to the preservation of our community's history and helping us create a more vibrant and engaging future for all.
