The Porto Hat Shop is a historic hat-making business and retail store in Porto, established in 1897 as Chapelaria Centro da Moda. Located on Rua de Santa Catarina, it has combined the manufacture and sale of hats and caps since its beginnings. The Baião family became involved in managing the firm in 1942, and in 1989 entered its company partnership; the business continues under the commercial name José e Baião Lda.
The shop’s work spans fabric caps and hats as well as felt hats, crafted by hand from wool, rabbit and beaver hair. Its products have served the Portuguese market and, over time, reached overseas markets and Europe through exports. The Porto Hat Shop presents its heritage as a blend of craftsmanship, tradition and quality, reflecting more than a century of experience in its trade.
Chapelaria Centro da Moda has been recognized by Porto de Tradição, a Porto City Council initiative that recognizes and protects historic establishments with an important role in the city’s culture, heritage and traditional life.
