Shellworks develops VIVOMER, a plastic-free biomaterial designed to give brands the functionality of conventional plastic without its persistent waste. Made through natural fermentation, VIVOMER uses plant-based waste feedstocks that microorganisms convert into natural polymers. The resulting material is formed into pellets and can be processed with existing manufacturing equipment.
VIVOMER is suitable for rigid or flexible packaging and can be finished in different colours and appearances, with options including screen printing, hot foiling, debossing and labelling. It is designed to be reusable and recyclable, and to break down through microbial activity in soil at the end of its useful life, without leaving microplastics. Shellworks reports that the material contains no microplastics, phthalates, BPA or PFAS, and is certified for food contact under FDA and EU 10/2011 standards.
The company supports brands from initial sampling through production, with manufacturing across the UK, EU and US. VIVOMER is compatible with injection moulding, blow moulding and extrusion, and is designed for durable, shelf-stable use, including in dishwasher and shower environments.
