The Social History Archive provides digital access to an extensive collection of British, Irish and former Empire newspapers and historical records for academic research and teaching. Its holdings include more than 2,800 newspaper titles, with 7 million issues and 98 million pages dating from 1699 to 2014, alongside over 2,900 record sets containing 474 million images and 3.6 billion transcribed entries. The records span from the thirteenth century to 2025 and draw on archives in Britain, Ireland and beyond.
The archive serves universities and other research and teaching institutions across the humanities and social sciences. Institutions can choose curated Primary Source Series for focused study or broader All Newspapers, All Records and All Access packages, available through annual subscriptions or purchase agreements. Services include secure institutional access through SSO or IP/EZProxy, discoverability support through KBART and MARC, and usage reporting compliant with COUNTER and SUSHI. Developed with the British Library and other partners, and drawing on D.C. Thomson’s heritage, the growing collections support interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching.
