The Solar Movement is a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to making solar energy the default source of power by combining innovative design, technology, and advocacy. Founded by visionary solar designers Marjan van Aubel and Pauline van Dongen, in collaboration with strategist Pallas Agterberg, the movement envisions a future where solar energy seamlessly integrates into our lives, fostering sustainability, equity, and joy. The aim of The Solar Movement is to establish solar design as a recognized design driver worldwide – deviating from the dominant, technical approach to solar that has long ignored the key cultural aspects of a solar centric movement.

The Solar Biennale | Rotterdam presented a new and inclusive perspective on the energy of the sun through a variety of programs. This initiative, created by solar designers Marjan van Aubel and Pauline van Dongen, took place from September 8 to October 2022 in Rotterdam and Eindhoven. Unlike traditional views on solar energy, The Solar Biennale aimed to highlight the human angle and explore a solar-powered world beyond scientific research and uniform solar panels.
By focusing on cultural practices and place-specific energy, the biennale offered insight into how the post-carbon future will develop. The Solar Biennale is part of The Solar Movement, which seeks to shift the perspective on solar energy and integrate it into everyone's livelihood. The Solar Pavilion, a collaboration with V8 Architects, Kameleon Solar, Marjan van Aubel Studio, and Dutch Design Week, provided visitors with a space to experience the poetic power of the sun.
Additionally, the Sun in the City program engaged the people of Rotterdam, bringing solar energy to various locations and exploring their relationships with the sun. The Solar Biennale also organized Solar Labs focused on knowledge and innovation in solar design. To learn more, visit their website and social media channels
