About The Story of Emily
The Story of Emily is a heritage attraction in St Ive, near Liskeard, Cornwall, dedicated to the life and legacy of Emily Hobhouse (1860–1926), the Cornish humanitarian, pacifist and feminist. Visitors can explore the restored Grade II listed Rectory, Emily’s childhood home, and discover details of Victorian family life. The War Rooms museum brings her humanitarian work during the Anglo-Boer War to life through immersive storytelling about Boer homesteads, guerrilla warfare, the Scorched Earth Policy and concentration camps.
The experience also traces Hobhouse’s efforts to expose suffering, publish reports and advocate for women and children. On site, the restaurant serves South African heritage recipes inspired by the late 19th century, prepared with fresh Cornish ingredients and enjoyed beside the Kitchen Garden. The attraction offers timed-entry tickets, gift cards and visitor information, with guests encouraged to allow at least four hours for a full visit.
Through its exhibits, food and events, The Story of Emily offers an engaging day out rooted in Cornwall and connected to South African history
