About @Thomasdayhouse
Thomas Day House is a historic house and preservation project in Petersburg, Virginia, dedicated to celebrating the craftsmanship and legacy of Thomas Day, a 19th-century furniture maker and cabinetmaker. Born a free Black man in Virginia, Day moved to Milton, North Carolina, in 1817 and built a highly successful business, operating the state’s largest and most productive workshop from the 1830s through the 1850s.
Originally built in South Boston, Virginia, in 1827, the house was threatened with demolition in the 1990s. It was dismantled, moved to Petersburg, and later purchased by Bill Nicholson in 2019. The restoration highlights Day’s distinctive work through preserved architectural details, including doors, windows, mantels, baseboards, porches, columns, and a signature newel post. The house also showcases interiors and a collection of furniture made by Day. Nicholson has continued to build a substantial collection of original Thomas Day furniture, described as one of the largest private collections in the country.
