Thomson Memorial Cemetery is a historic cemetery in Thomson, Georgia, established in 1854 after Bethany Methodist Church moved to Main Street and became the First United Methodist Church. The cemetery land was deeded by James R. Wilson, and its earliest marked grave is that of Mary Sutton, who died in 1855. With 1,102 marked and unmarked graves recorded as of 2008, the site preserves local history and reflects the 19th-century Rural Cemetery Movement, which favored landscaped, park-like burial grounds.
The cemetery offers burial listings, a burial database, and a self-guided tour highlighting notable individuals and graves across designated sections. Visitors can learn about features such as the Confederate grave markers, whose inscriptions and design reference the Civil War and the Confederate States of America. A printed burial-listing booklet is available for purchase through local visitor and cultural organizations. Located at 212 Tom Watson Way, Thomson Memorial Cemetery also accepts donations to help support its ongoing care and maintenance.
