Established on December 8, 2000, by thirteen influential figures in civil society, Yayasan Tifa has been dedicated to strengthening the role of civil society in protecting the rights of minority and marginalized groups, expanding freedom of expression and advocacy for a free media, improving governance, transparency, and accountability in public policy formulation and implementation, and other programs aligned with the goal of an open society in Indonesia. Thanks to their efforts, Yayasan Tifa has become a key player in promoting an open society, including enhancing the quality of democracy and upholding human rights in Indonesia.

The organization's name, Tifa, was derived from a percussion instrument used in traditional ceremonies to call people to participate and spread messages of peace and harmony. With a vision of a "realized open society that serves diversity, equality, and justice," Yayasan Tifa strategically focuses on initiatives that consolidate efforts from Indonesian civil society to promote inclusive policies that respect human rights, ensure access to justice for all citizens, address environmental and natural resource justice for marginalized communities, deepen innovation, democracy, and social movements, and foster transparency and accountability in the digital data ecosystem
