About Tijuana River NERR
The Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve (TRNERR) preserves, protects, and manages the natural and cultural resources of the Tijuana River Estuary in Southern California. One of 30 estuarine research reserves in the United States, it combines conservation with opportunities for research, education, and public recreation. The estuary’s distinctive socio-ecological setting serves as a living laboratory for research and monitoring, while educational programs introduce visitors and students to the Reserve’s natural and cultural heritage.
Visitors can explore the coastal wetland through activities including hiking, biking, birding, and horseback riding. TRNERR also offers public programs, school programs, volunteer and stewardship opportunities, training, and community engagement. Its facilities and visitor destinations include the Tijuana Estuary Visitor Center and Border Field State Park, where visitors can learn about the area and access outdoor experiences. The Reserve shares announcements, events, research resources, and updates through its website and newsletter. Through these offerings, TRNERR connects people with the estuary while supporting its long-term care and making the landscape more accessible to visitors of all abilities.
