Timber Trail is an official Great Ride in New Zealand’s Nga Haerenga network, offering an 84-kilometre Grade 3 adventure through Pureora Forest in the central North Island. The trail welcomes mountain bikers, runners, and walkers, with a two-day ride recommended and year-round access. Along the route, visitors can cross eight suspension bridges, including the 141-metre Maramataha Bridge, and experience native forest, birdsong, historic bush tramways, and the Ongarue Spiral. The journey also reflects the area’s cultural connections and timber heritage.
The Timber Trail website helps visitors plan and organise their trip with trail maps, navigation details, status updates, riding guidance, FAQs, and information on access and trail grades. Practical options include shuttle transport, luggage transfers, and mountain-bike or e-MTB hire. Accommodation ranges from camping and glamping to eco-lodges and other rider-friendly stays. Visitors can seek booking help from the local i-Site or book through official trail partners. The trail is free to ride, and supporters can contribute through donations or the official trail survey.
