Tiptree

The Otherwise Award is an annual literary award that celebrates science fiction, fantasy, and other speculative narratives that explore and expand understandings of gender. Formerly known as the Tiptree Award, it encourages juries to consider works beyond narrow genre definitions and to recognize intersectional, trans-inclusive approaches to gender, including its connections with race, class, nationality, disability, and other systems of identity and power. Awards are presented at WisCon, a feminist science fiction convention, to creators whose works were published in the previous year.

The program also announces an Honor List of other notable works. While novels and short stories are frequently recognized, eligible works have included poetry, film, television, and music. Anyone may recommend a work, including their own, at no cost.

The organization also offers Otherwise Fellowships: small grants supporting emerging creators who use speculative narrative to shift perspectives on gender. Its activities are funded through donations and community fundraising, including an annual charity auction and bakesales
