About Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc
Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc is a brand that holds deep historical and cultural significance. The Secwepemc people once inhabited a vast territory spanning 145,000 square kilometers. However, after European contact, the colonial government divided them into 17 distinct groups with specific lands assigned to each.
The Kamloops Reserve, established in 1862 under Governor James Douglas, is located east of the North Thompson River and north of the South Thompson River, adjacent to the City of Kamloops. The word Kamloops translates to Tk’emlúps in the Shuswap language, meaning where the rivers meet. For centuries, this land has been the ancestral home of the Tk’emlupsemc, also known as the people of the confluence.
Tk’emlúps holds great economic importance due to its strategic location along major trade routes. With a rich history and a strong presence in our region, Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc truly represents the heritage and strength of the Secwepemc people
