Welcome to the Tennessee State Museum, where history comes alive! Our mission is to procure, preserve, exhibit, and interpret objects that reflect the social, political, economic, and cultural history of Tennessee and its people. With a rich history that dates back to 1817, when a museum was opened on the Nashville public square by portrait artist Ralph E. W.

Earl, we continue to honor our heritage. Our collection includes a life-size painting of General Andrew Jackson, which was seen by a young boy in 1823. Over the years, our museum has expanded and evolved.

In 1981, we moved to the James K. Polk Center, and in 2018, we opened our new state-of-the-art facility at the Bicentennial Mall in Nashville. This 137,000 sq.
