About Tennessee World Affairs Council
The Tennessee World Affairs Council (TNWAC) is a non-profit organization established in 2007 with the aim of delivering global awareness programs and resources to communities, especially schools, across Tennessee. Recognizing the lack of knowledge about world affairs among Americans, TNWAC was founded by concerned professionals from various fields. Their concern was fueled by a 2006 National Geographic/Roper survey that revealed a distressing statistic: only 37% of 18-24 year olds were able to locate Iraq on a map, despite three years of war.
After joining the national network of World Affairs Councils, TNWAC gained access to national programs that could be shared with local schools and communities. Initially focusing on the Upper Cumberland region, TNWAC quickly expanded its reach and re-launched in Nashville in 2015. The Council now provides international education awareness opportunities to both the Nashville and Middle Tennessee communities.
Additionally, TNWAC offers remotely deliverable programs and speaker visits to cater to statewide needs. TNWAC's mission is to promote international awareness, understanding, and connections in order to enhance the region's global stature and prepare Tennesseans to thrive in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
