About Toji
Toji, also known as Kyo-o-gokokuji, is the head temple of the Shingon Buddhist tradition and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its official website introduces the temple’s history, grounds, architecture, Buddhist teachings, and cultural treasures, while helping visitors plan a visit and learn about temple activities. Highlights include the five-story pagoda, the Main Hall, the Lecture Hall and its sculptural mandala, the Miei-do dedicated to Kobo Daishi Kukai, and the Treasure Museum.
The site also presents the temple’s artworks and historic buildings, including the subtemple Kanchi-in, and shares information about the influential monk Kukai and the monthly Kobo market. Visitors can find guidance on worship services, prayers and memorial services, sutra copying, admission, opening times, and transportation. Seasonal special openings and exhibitions offer access to selected spaces and collections, with programs that may include the pagoda’s first level, the Lecture Hall, and evening viewing of the Main and Lecture Halls.
Toji’s website serves as a resource for discovering its spiritual heritage and arranging an informed visit
