Tomorrow’s Cities is a global initiative working to reduce disaster risk for the urban poor by helping cities plan for more equitable and resilient futures. Its work brings together researchers, communities, decision-makers and partner organisations to understand how urban development choices can shape risk and wellbeing. The initiative supports partner cities including Istanbul, Kathmandu, Rapti, Nairobi, Quito, Nablus, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazaar, Dar es Salaam and Nakuru.
Its core offering is the Tomorrow’s Cities Decision Support Environment (TCDSE), a framework and set of tools for connecting future visioning, urban scenarios, hazard and impact modelling, risk agreement and implementation pathways. These resources help local stakeholders explore possible futures and inform decisions about development and disaster risk reduction. The programme also provides training, a MOOC, training materials, a web app, publications, videos and a data management portal. Through city partnerships, workshops, research and a community of practice, Tomorrow’s Cities promotes inclusive, science-informed planning and shares practical learning across locations.
